REVIEW
"'Commit,' a bold and accomplished film by writer-director Mickey Blaine, which takes place in three uncut takes of about 30 minutes each and details, with snappy writing and sharp acting, the budding relationship between two lonely singles who meet online and make a disturbing pact with
one another. Sundance and Hollywood spit out scores of relationship films each year that haven't a fraction of this movie's craft, depth or invention."
-Shawn Levy, Oregon Live
"Each indie-film presented at the festival was a very special find. For example Mickey Blaine's intimate experimental play, which tells in 90 compact minutes, and with only minimal editing, the touching and surprisingly funny story of a suicide pact: The result is a smart script and an outstandingly acted variation of "When Harry Met Sally" for the Kurt Cobain generation."
-Schnitt
"A sharply-written, funny, and surprisingly suspenseful 'three-act-drama', 'commit' was - remarkably
- shot in 3 continuous, 30-minute takes! Two enormously appealing lead performances make this a
commitment well worth keeping."
-Edmonton International Film Festival
"Two strangers meet at a cafe for a typical blind date. But both participants show little interest in each other and the conversation develops achingly slow. Only their brutal honesty is remarkable: He confesses that he dreams about killing people, she tells him about her sexual relation with her cousin. They struggle with each other, fighting to come out as superior. Harmless topics lead to the most extreme confessions. When the true purpose of this meeting is finally revealed it comes as a shock and a relief: The two have agreed to mutually kill each other. The intimacy of the concerted death frees them to talk about everything that is usually suppressed. A normal dialogue cannot develop under these circumstances as they constantly bring up their deepest and innermost feelings and fears. The intense confessions bring out a fascination with the characters, who seem to fall in love with each other more and more with every hair-raising story. 'Commit' dares to go where independent cinema is truly at home: In the most extreme situations and among the most existential human conditions.Anonymity, sudden intimacy and the unspectacular extremism of everyday fears and longings form the strong thematic core of this film, which comes across as one giant broken taboo."
-Oldenburg International Film Festival
"Instead of bemoaning his micro-budget, Mickey Blaine turns it into a virtue and produces an intensive, smart and enthralling small two-person thriller, which simply carries the audience with its sharp dialogue right up to the final shootout as a proof of love."
-Nordwest Zeitung
"Full of sharp, witty and tremendously amusing dialogues."

"COMMIT is an intriguing tale of two people who find one another on the internet, each looking for someone special. Well, rather, each was looking for someone willing to do something extremely special. The structure of the film was quite simple. Presented in three, uncut 30-minute segments, the film is mostly all dialogue. There's little or no action. Simple conversation. The tale is told in text and
presentation. The writing was superb, the exchanges sharp and witty. The acting really was great. Nicole Blaine and Forest Erickson gave engaging and touchable performances. There are such great, intelligent, witty exchanges between Blaine and Erickson, such solid chemistry, discussions that suggest so much to live for, that it is near impossible to believe they are contemplating their own mortality.
"Commit" is solid faire. Look for a DVD or an internet presentation. This film will last."

SYNOPSIS
Winner of three "Best Feature Film" awards, a "Best Screenplay" award, an "Audience Choice" award and a "Best Ensemble Cast" award, "Commit" tells the story of a disillusioned substitute teacher and a depressive cop who strike up an online conversation that could change the course of their entire lives in this dialogue-driven comedy drama from director Mickey Blaine. "Sylvia" and "Steiner" are two people who have grown disappointed with their lives. After entering into a stimulating online chat, the two strangers agree to meet up for coffee at a New York City cafe. From the first word spoken, it's apparent to both that there is a strong connection. During the course of their conversation, both "Sylvia" and "Steiner" reveal intimate secrets about their pasts before hatching a plan that could make their dull lives interesting again. Comprised of three continuous takes (one take for each act), and shot over the course of three days, "Commit" is witty and disturbing, as well as an inspirational achievement in independent
filmmaking. |
